Former Newcastle United forward rejects chance to join Real Madrid's coaching staff

Former Newcastle United forward Duncan Ferguson has rejected the chance to join Real Madrid's coaching staff.

That is according to The Sun, who claim 'Big Dunc' has turned down the opportunity to work with Carlo Ancelotti in the Spanish capital because he wants to become Everton's new manager.

Ferguson, who played for Newcastle between 1998 and 2000, was part of Ancelotti's coaching staff at Goodison Park and the Italian was keen to bring the Scot with him to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

But the report claims the 49-year-old is keen to take on the manager's position and has lined up former Toffees team-mate Lee Carsley as his assistant manager.

Ferguson is a huge fans' favourite with the blue half of Merseyside and was unbeaten in three matches while taking temporary charge of the Toffees back in December 2019.

However, former Wolves boss Nuno Esperito Santo remains the favourite with the bookmakers to succeed Ancelotti, while Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, David Moyes and former Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez all have lower odds than Ferguson to get the job.

Ancelotti sealed his return to Real Madrid last week, six years after he was sacked as manager having guided Los Blancos to the Champions League, Copa Del Rey and Club World Cup titles during his two-year stay.
