Former Newcastle United defender jokes he would now be worth £80m

Former Newcastle United defender Sylvain Distin has joked with fans on social media he would now be worth £80m.

The French defender spent a season on loan with the Magpies before deciding to sign permanently for Manchester City in 2002.

The imposing centre-back would also enjoy spells with Porsmouth and Everton before finishing his career with Bournemouth.

Distin was part of Harry Redknapp's FA Cup winning side at Fratton Park, and is often considered as one of the players to have slipped through the net at United in recent years.

It is perhaps at Portsmouth where the former defender is remembered most fondly, forging an impressive partnership with Sol Campbell in their run to Wembley.

Distin made a memorable goal-line clearance in their unlikely quarter-final victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, and helped the club keep a clean sheet in their final success over Cardiff City.

The Frenchman spent just two years at Fratton Park before departing for Everton, but that has not affected his standing among the club's supporters.

A recent discussion on social media raised the subject of whether he was Pompey's best defender of all time - a subject which provoked plenty of comments.

The thread even prompted a response from Distin himself, who replied to a post questioning how much he would be worth in today's market.

Given the recent £80m and £75m transfers of Harry Maguire and Virgil Van Dijk to Manchester United and Liverpool, the Frenchman joked he would command a similar fee - as well as a minimum of £200k per week.

He wrote: 'Thanks guys. I would price myself at £80m with £200k a week please .... to start with."
