Former Newcastle United defender applies for vacant Under-23 manager's role

Former Newcastle United defender Peter Ramage is in the running to become the club's new Under-23 boss.

Ramage is believed to be one of the candidates to replace Neil Redfearn after his departure in November.

The ex-Toon man - who knows all about rising through the ranks at the club's Academy - made 68 appearances for the club and starred in Europe before being sold to Queens Park Rangers in 2008.

Ramage, 36, would work with head of coaching Ben Dawson and his former team-mate Steve Harper were he to be successful in his application.

Speaking recently about Harper's return to the club, Dawson told Chronicle Live: "Steve Harper's appointment has been a big, big plus.

"Because of our existing relationship it helps the process.

"Now that he is in place it allows us to chat a bit more often."

United's Under-23s started 2020 in fantastic style as they beat Fulham 3-0 at Little Benton.

Their next test will be an away trip to Manchester United with the game taking place in Leigh.
