Former Newcastle United boss Ossie Ardiles confirms Covid-19 recovery after 'long fight'

Former Newcastle United boss Ossie Ardiles has confirmed he has made a full recovery following a 'long fight' with Covid-19.

The Tottenham Hotspur legend was diagnosed with the illness on January 1, but has remained active on social media over the last fortnight.

Ardiles - who managed the Magpies for 10 months in 1991 - has been inundated with messages of support from the football community.

Now, the Argentinian World Cup winner has confirmed he has recovered from the 'horrible virus', and has thanked fans for their support since the turn of the year.

Ardiles posted on Saturday: "To all my followers: I'm happy to report that I have recovered now from Covid 19.

"I was tested positive the 1st of January and it has been a long fight with this horrible virus.

"Thank you very much to all of you for your concern and best wishes."

Ardiles gave a recent interview to ChronicleLive, reflecting on his brief spell in the dugout at St James' Park.

The 68-year-old admits he was not surprised by his departure, and believes his successors benefited from a squad of promising players.

"I was kind of expecting it," Ardiles told ChronicleLive. "I knew the result. I knew what was expected at Newcastle. I was very confident I could change it but changing it required support.

"It was incredibly obvious we needed two or three experienced players. I was looking all the time but when it came to the crunch, the answer was no. We didn't have the money.

"I knew something would happen but I was thinking, 'How lucky will the new manager be' because the quality of our young players was outstanding.

"Maybe not for that exact moment, but it was only a question of time."
