Former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton appointed Nottingham Forest manager

Former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has been appointed manager of Nottingham Forest, replacing the sacked Sabri Lamouchi.

Hughton takes charge after spending last season without a club following his departure from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2019.

The Irishman was in charge of Newcastle between 2009 and 2010, having previously been a coach at the club, and led the Magpies to promotion.

Lamouchi took over at the Reds in 2019 and led them to a play-off challenge last season.

Yet a period of poor form, combined with a disastrous final-day 4-1 defeat to a struggling Stoke City side, saw them crash out of the top six after spending the majority of the season in the play-off places.

A summer overhaul followed, with 13 first-team players moving to the City Ground and 13 senior players departing.

The mass of transfers failed to reignite Forest’s form this season, though, with the Reds suffering defeat in all four of their Championship games so far this season.

Lamouchi’s side have scored just one league goal and conceded seven so far to leave them third-bottom in the Championship.

Only Wycombe, who have conceded 10 goals and were heavily tipped for relegation this season, and Sheffield Wednesday, who were hit with a points deduction at the start of the season, sit below them.

A statement on Forest’s website confirmed Lamouchi had been sacked.

It said: “Nottingham Forest can confirm that the contract of head coach Sabri Lamouchi has been terminated with immediate effect.”

Lamouchi’s last game in charge proved to be a 2-1 defeat at home to Bristol City on Saturday.

Forest went 2-0 down before pulling a goal back through Luke Freeman.

Despite having 20 shots on goal in comparison to league leaders Bristol City’s seven, Forest were unable to force an equaliser, with 14 of their shots falling off target.
