Former Newcastle striker Ivan Toney demands 'respect on my name' after record-breaking season

Former Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney has hit back at his critics following a record-breaking season.

The Brentford forward enjoyed a memorable debut campaign in the Championship and netted his 31st league strike in the final-day victory at Bristol City.

It is a campaign which could still end in promotion for the Bees, with Thomas Frank's side preparing for a playoff tie with Bournemouth.

Toney made just two first-team appearances with the Magpies and enjoyed mixed success in loan spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, and Wigan Athletic.

Peterborough United agreed a permanent deal with Newcastle for the young striker in 2018, and it was a prolific two-year stint at London Road which earned the 25-year-old his Championship move.

Toney's strike at Ashton Gate broke Glenn Murray's eight-year record for the most goals scored in a Championship campaign since the division's rebrand in 2004.

The striker took to social media following the victory to celebrate the achievement, while also stressing the job is not done when it comes to Brentford's objective of promotion.

However, the former Magpies forward also took a swipe at critics who previously doubted him.

Toney posted: "‘He only scores tap ins’ ‘he only scores pens’ 31 goals I call it!

"Happy 2 [sic] break the record but obviously couldn’t of done it without my team mates.

"On to the play offs now let’s finish the job off. Also just maybe now you can put a lil [sic] respect on my name."
