Former Newcastle United star Joey Barton to appear in court for assault charge

Former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton is set to appear in court charged with assaulting a fellow football manager.

Barton, who manages Fleetwood Town, is alleged to have pushed then-Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley, on April 13, leaving Mr Stendel with a damaged tooth.

Barton is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court today, charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Barton, who played for Newcastle between 2007 and 2011, indicated a not guilty plea during an appearance at Barnsley Magistrates' Court last month.

The 37-year-old was charged following an incident in the tunnel after the League One match between Barnsley and Fleetwood, which the South Yorkshire side won 4-2.

As well as Newcastle, Barton played for Manchester City, QPR, Marseille, Rangers and Burnley during his club career. He has one England cap and took up his managerial position at Fleetwood Town in 2018.
