Former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye reveals England ambition and post-retirement plans

Former Newcastle United playmaker Yohan Cabaye has revealed his intention to start a career in coaching following his retirement.

The Magpies cult hero confirmed his playing days are over in an emotional statement shared on social media last week.

Cabaye became an instant fans' favourite following his arrival from Lille, and was an integral member of the Magpies side which earned a shock fifth-placed finish in the 2011/12 season.

The circumstances of the French international's departure to Paris Saint-Germain in January 2014 failed to sour his relationship with United's fanbase.

Spells with Crystal Palace and Saint-Etienne followed, and the 35-year-old was a free agent for several months before confirming his retirement.

However, Cabaye is evidently keen to return to football as soon as possible after outlining his ambition to become a sporting director.

The former Magpie told Crystal Palace's club website : "I want to do courses, like coaching licenses.

“There’s a school in France on how to be a sporting director that I’m interested in. I want to go back to school, now to learn and try to stay involved in the game.

“I’m excited to learn about how to develop a football club’s philosophy from the academy to the youth teams up to the senior players. It’s something I want to learn and I’m really excited about.

“I hope for the next two years to try and learn, to get my degree, and then hopefully work in a football club.”

Cabaye revealed he had several offers to return to action in January, but was keen to focus upon his future off the pitch.

The 48-cap international spoke with former team-mates on how to approach retirement, and was advised to remain active within the sport.

Now, Cabaye has his sight on a backroom role in his native France or for a third spell in England.

He added: “I really want to learn, and to become the best that I can before I try and do something. Hopefully one day in France or in England to be a sports director would be fantastic for me.

“It could be really exciting.”
