Former Newcastle favourite now a free agent after agreeing to contract termination

Former Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon is now a free agent after agreeing to a mutual termination of his contract at Everton. The Venezuela international scored three goals in 31 appearances for the Toffees after joining from Chinese side Dalian Professional in August 2021.

Rondon has started just one Premier League match for Everton this season, despite an injury to first-choice striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The 33-year-old was contracted to Goodison Park until next June, but a club statement confirming a mutual termination of this deal was released on Friday.

Rondon enjoyed a successful loan spell at St James' Park in the 2018/19 campaign, a move which saw Dwight Gayle head the other way to West Brom. The former number nine netted 12 times in all competitions, and shone in a frontline alongside Miguel Almiron and Ayoze Perez towards the end of the campaign.

However, no permanent deal was forthcoming for Rondon and he was shortly followed out of the exit door by both Perez and former manager Rafa Benitez. Reflecting on his time on Tyneside in an interview in November 2020, the veteran striker confirmed he had been keen to stay with the Magpies.

Rondon told the Athletic: “It’s about decisions and it wasn’t my decision. If Newcastle had offered me a deal, if they’d said ‘Do you want to stay here?’, then of course I would have stayed.

"To be honest, that season was the best I’ve ever had. Not just because I scored goals, but because everything around me was so right, from the school of my children, to the city, the people, my family being happy."
