Former Newcastle boss John Carver could be set to join Scotland setup ahead of EURO 2021 play-offs

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has revealed he has held talks with John Carver over becoming the Tartan Army's new assistant manager.

Former Newcastle caretaker manager and assistant coach, Carver, has been out of work since leaving his job as assistant manager of West Brom in April 2018.

He revealed in an interview with Sky Sports earlier this month that he was looking to return to management to 'put his own stamp' on a club but it now appears as if he is close to taking another job as a number two.

Clarke, of course, was Newcastle's assistant manager between 1998 and 2000 and worked closely with Carver during Ruud Gullit and Sir Bobby Robson's time in charge of the Magpies.

The pair have kept in touch since and have remained good friends.

And after Kilmarnock boss Alex Dyer stepped down from his role with Scotland number two, Clarke is keen for a reunion with Carver ahead of their 2020/21 UEFA Nations League campaign, as well as October's EURO 2021 play-offs.

“I’m looking for a new assistant or a new coach to come in,” Clarke told the Scottish press on Tuesday.

“I’ve spoken to John Carver, who I’ve known for a long, long time. He’s out of work at the moment, and is enthusiastic to come and join us.

“It’s been finalised that Alex won’t be there. Hopefully, in the next couple of days, I’ll secure John, and he can come up and help us.”
