Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was hospitalised after a high-speed car crash in New Hampshire.

Giuliani, 81, suffered a fractured thoracic vertebrae and multiple lacerations as well as cuts to his left arm and lower leg after the smash on a highway near Manchester late on Saturday.

Head of security Michael Ragusa said in a post on the social media site X, formerly Twitter, Giuliani’s rental car was hit from behind.

Ragusa said the politician is “in great spirits and recovering tremendously”. He is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days.

“This was not a targeted attack,” Ragusa made clear.

Prior to the accident, Giuliani had been flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident.

He contacted police assistance on her behalf, Ragusa said.

In the statement, he added the subsequent crash was “random and unrelated” to the domestic drama and “no one knew it was him”.

Andrew Giuliani, the son of US President Donald Trump’s former attorney, wrote on X: “Thank you to all the people that have reached out since learning the news about my Father.

“Your prayers mean the world.

“As a son, I can tell you I’m honored to have a Dad that I can call the toughest SOB I’ve ever seen!”
