Former NBA No. 1 pick Joe Smith puts his desert home on the block

June 17--A home owned by Joe Smith, the former college basketball standout drafted No.1 overall by the Golden State Warriors in 1995, is on the market in Scottsdale, Ariz., for $2.75 million.

Found within a gated community, the Tuscan-inspired Contemporary sits on about an acre with a swimming pool and spa, a fire pit, a lighted sports court, a playground and a casita.

Built in 2002, the 8,200-square-foot home features a foyer and step-down living room that opens to a formal dining room. Trey ceilings, as well as arched doorways and windows, lend a rustic touch to the single-story floor plan, which has five bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

Among the amenities are an open-area kitchen with a large center island, a movie theater with tiered seating and a game room with a wet bar. A separate casita holds an exercise room and a music studio.

Outdoors, a covered patio with a built-in barbecue opens onto the grounds.

Smith, 39, was college basketball's player of the year his sophomore year at the University of Maryland. The forward-center went on to play 16 seasons with 13 different teams, including stints with the Warriors, Timberwolves and Lakers.

In 2000, his contract with Minnesota was voided as a result of a salary-cap-tampering scandal involving Kevin McHale, then the Timberwolves general manager.

He bought the home in 2005 for $2.225 million, records show.

Yolanda Smith of Keller Williams Arizona Realty holds the listing in collaboration with Ikem Chukumerije of Sports Relocation Inc.
