Former NBA commissioner David Stern undergoes emergency surgery

The NBA is turning its focus Friday to the health of the league’s former commissioner.

David Stern suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage Thursday and underwent emergency surgery for it. The NBA announced the news late Thursday night, sending stern and his family thoughts and prayers.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the 77-year-old collapsed at a Manhattan restaurant before being rushed to the hospital.

Stern stepped into the role of NBA Commissioner in 1984, helping elevate the league to its highest heights. Stern’s tenure as commish ended in 2014 when Adam Silver replaced him.

There has not been a health update regarding Stern’s status since late Thursday, but many in the NBA have wished him well including Chris Paul, Danny Green and the NBA on TNT broadcast team.
