A former sailor from Staple Hill who sexually abused a child has been jailed for the rest of his life.
Edwin Walker admitted a raft of abuse charges on the girl, Bristol Crown Court heard.
The 86-year-old, of The Hawthorns, pleaded guilty to 17 indecent assault charges, some on a multiple count basis.
The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC jailed him for 17-and-a-half years, with five years extended licence.
The judge quoted extracts from the complainant's impact statement, in which she said of Walker: "I feel that he's a monster.
"He has ruined my life and he could have ruined others'.
"I need justice and I need closure."
The judge told the court: "It is the hope of this court that today will provide her with some degree of closure."
Fiona Elder, prosecuting, said the child was aged five when Walker first abused her.
The complainant kept the abuse to herself before disclosing to her family what happened.
The sexual abuse was then reported to police.
John Stokes, defending, said Walker was Bristol born and bred and ran away from home aged 11.
He left school aged 14 and joined the Royal Navy before marrying aged 21 and having children.
The court heard he worked until last year.
Mr Stokes said: "He does not rationalize his behaviour.
"He recognizes he wrecked her life and other people's lives."
Walker suffers from leg ulcers and breathing difficulties but has no significant physical or mental health issues, the court was told.
Mr Stokes added: "He says if he learned nothing else in the navy he recognizes if you commit a criminal offence you must be punished for that.
"He recognizes he is unlikely to be released from custody.
"He recognizes he will probably die in custody."
