Former Motherwell player and Sweden cap passes away after decade-long motor neurone disease battle

Former Motherwell player Stefan Lindqvist has passed away aged 52 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Former club IFK Göteborg confirmed the news noting that he had been living with the form of motor neurone disease for a decade.

The midfielder made his debut for the Steelmen against Dundee United during the 1997/1998 campaign.

He scored the only goal of his brief stay in Lanarkshire with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock.

He was a firm fan favourite at IFK Göteborg captaining the side and playing a huge part in their quarter-final Champions League run in 1995.

Lindqvist also earned five Sweden caps, scoring once.

The statement IFK Göteborg read: "IFK Gothenburg remembers its former team captain and midfielder with the fine passing foot, the fighter's willingness and the great understanding of the game.

"Stefan was praised by both old teammates and IFK Göteborg when a legendary match was played in his honor and to mark the fight against ALS.

"In mourning, we especially think of Stefan's wife Ulrika and her daughters Victoria and Annie."
