Former Motherwell keeper allegedly 'knifed in the street' after road crash near his home

A former top flight goalkeeper was allegedly stabbed in the street moments after a road crash near his home.

Ex- Motherwell number one Jon Connolly is believed to have suffered knife wounds during an incident in Bargeddie near Coatbridge.

The 39-year-old was rushed to Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary for treatment following the disturbance in Monkland View Crescent at around 7.50pm on Monday.

Last night Police Scotland said a 44-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Jon’s injuries were not life-threatening and he signed himself out of hospital late on Monday to continue his recovery at home.

The popular goalkeeper who became a legend in the Junior game, said he was “just a wee bit sore”.

The Glasgow-born shotstopper, who played for St Johnstone and Ipswich Town as a youth, also turned out for Albion Rovers, Dumbarton, Stenhousemuir and East Stirlingshire.

He played with Billy Davies’s successful Motherwell side at the turn of the century.

Speaking previously about his time at Fir Park, where he was back-up for Rangers legend Andy Goram, Jon said: “Every day Billy  set me targets and kept on my case.

“He told me to get my weight down, go and perform for the under 21s and then he would put me in the first team. And that’s exactly what happened.”

He then became a journeyman who plied his trade across Scotland, turning out for Thorniewood United, Cumnock Juniors, Dunipace Juniors, Linlithgow Rose, Larkhall Thistle, Bo’ness United, Cambuslang Rangers, and St Anthony’s in the Junior ranks.

He also played for Kirkintilloch Rob Roy, Kilwinning Rangers, Vale of Clyde, and Rossvale, and became manager of Fauldhouse United, following two spells at the club as a player, before leaving the role earlier this year.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police were called to a report of a disturbance on Monkland View Crescent, Bargeddie, following a road crash on the street around 7.55pm on Monday, June 1, 2020.

“A 39-year-old man was seriously assaulted and taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment.

“A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection. Enquiries are ongoing.”
