Former Motherwell and Rangers boss appointed Sheffield United assistant as ex-Hibs manager takes charge of Blades

Former Motherwell and Rangers manager Stuart McCall has been appointed assistant manager to Paul Heckingbottom at Sheffield United.

The 57-year-old was assistant at fellow English Championship side Blackpool but joins Hibs' former boss in Yorkshire.

The Bramall Lane club have parted ways with Slaviša Jokanović after just 19 league games at the helm, and Heckingbottom has signed a lengthy deal to replace him until 2026.

He hasn't been in senior management since departing his role as Hibs boss in 2019 and most recently was Sheffield United's U23s head coach.

McCall meanwhile was last a manager with Bradford City, who he left in 2020. He enjoyed a successful stint as Motherwell boss between 2010-14, taking the club into the Champions League.

A move to Rangers beckoned after his Fir Park stint and he ironically lost to the Steelmen in the 2015 Premiership play-off final, less than a year after his ML1 exit.

Sheffield United chairman Yusuf Giansiracusa said: “We look forward to embarking on a new era in Blades football with Paul at the helm.

"Paul possesses the personal leadership qualities and technical football skills the board feels are essential to successfully implement the board’s strategic directives.

"We are convinced that Paul will play a leading role in improving all aspects of football operations.”
