Former monastery in Partick earmarked for luxury flats

A former monastery in Partick has been earmarked as the new location of luxury flats.

Named after the patron saint of Glasgow, planners are hoping to turn the former St Kentigerns Hostel into four three-bedroom apartments.

The B-listed building, also known as Wellpark House, is thought to have been built around 1858.

In the years since the building on Partickhill Road has undergone several renovations to its interior and exterior - resulting in the loss of some of its original features, including a stained glass window.

In 1874, it became St Peter’s College and in 1877, a wooden chapel was built behind the house.

The Archdiocese of Glasgow turned the building into St Kentigerns Hostel in 1906, as a residence for their students.

Architects later renovated the interior of the house from 1954-56 and it was used as student residence for Notre Dame College.

In 1991, the land containing the house was split into two plots and a three-storey block of flats was built within the former property grounds. In 2003, it was further renovated to include en-suite accommodation to all of the bedroom.

Developers have advised that they will retain or replace surviving original features - including several marble fireplaces and the remaining stained glass window.

Six parking spaces will also be created for residents.

Plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council ’s planning applications committee.
