In a disturbing case of police brutality, six former Mississippi officers have pleaded guilty to a combined 13 felonies in connection with the torture and abuse of two Black men, Eddie Parker and Michael Jenkins. The incident, which occurred on January 24, 2023, in Braxton, Mississippi, involved the officers illegally entering the victims' home and subjecting them to a horrific ordeal.
Parker and Jenkins, who had been trying to share their harrowing experience for months, finally saw justice after filing a federal civil rights lawsuit in June. The details of the incident were corroborated by federal prosecutors in August, leading to the guilty pleas of the former officers.
The officers, who referred to themselves as 'The Goon Squad,' were known for their excessive use of force and lack of accountability. Their actions, motivated by race according to the victims, included handcuffing, kicking, waterboarding, tasing, and even a gunshot to Jenkins' mouth.
During a news conference in Jackson, the victims' families and attorneys expressed their expectations for justice and called for the maximum sentences for the former officers. The sentencing proceedings, overseen by US District Court Judge Tom Lee, are set to take place this week.
While federal prosecutors are seeking the maximum sentences for the officers, details about the defense attorneys' strategies were not immediately available. The most serious charges are faced by Hunter Elward, who could receive up to 30 years in prison for discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
