Former Rankin County sheriff’s deputy Christian Dedmon received the harshest sentence of 40 years in prison for committing the most 'shocking, brutal, and cruel acts imaginable.' Another former deputy, Daniel Opdyke, was sentenced to over 17 years in prison.
The six former officers pleaded guilty to federal charges including conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights under color of law, and obstruction of justice. They were part of a group of White Mississippi law enforcement officers who raided a home without a warrant, subjected the two Black men to racist vitriol, and engaged in physical and sexual abuse.
Victims' attorney Malik Shabazz described Dedmon as 'oppressive' and 'sick,' with federal prosecutors highlighting his involvement in numerous missions using excessive force. Dedmon expressed remorse in court, acknowledging the pain he caused.
Opdyke, another former deputy, tearfully apologized to the victims, expressing deep regret for his actions. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison and ordered to undergo mental health treatment.
