Former Miss Universe model hits back after six-year-old daughter's diet is shamed

It seems in this age of social media trolling, people feel the need to shame and criticise almost everything we do on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram .

And not even Former Miss Universe contestant Rachael Finch is immune to the backlash.

The Australian mum recently came under fire online after sharing a photo of her six-year-old daughter's lunchbox for the first day back at school.

And while Finch is particularly health conscious and Violet's box was filled with an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables including cucumber, carrot sticks, grapes and strawberries, strangers online still felt the need to pick apart the contents and shame her for what she was feeding her little one.

Finch shared the picture with her 285,000 Instagram followers and one accidentally direct messaged her with a comment she wasn't meant to see.

It read: "I really don't think she feeds Violet enough food."

The mum-of-two wasn't sure why she was sent the message, but she decided to open up the conversation and defend her daughter's diet.

Posting a screenshot, she said: "That was a message that was sent to me by accident - but it opened a door for conversation around what I feed my kids.

"There were a lot of people saying that they were unfollowing because I don't feed Violet enough food."

Finch, who works as a personal trainer, was stunned by this reaction and showed off what else was in the lunchbox, including a separate tub filled with wholemeal pasta, cauliflower stalks and a handful of rice crackers.

She went on to say that her children's health and happiness is her number one priority, adding: "I give them real food, I give them whole pieces of fruit and I give them vegetables in their lunchbox. So Violet will go to school with sushi and a Greek salad, for example."

But this wasn't enough to satisfy some people, so the mum shared a longer statement to her Instagram grid.

She wrote: " As a mother, I feel it’s my absolute responsibility to ensure they are given the best possible childhood that I can provide, to help them when they do reach adulthood. And that includes what I choose to serve on their plates every day.

"I've lost count of the number of times I've read comments or articles about how 'strict' my kids food is or how I 'deprive' them of a normal childhood.

"If a mother wants to feed her child cherry tomatoes over cheezels then she can. It’s not deprivation or a screwed up childhood... it’s because she cares, and perhaps she has learnt from experience. Everything is a child is given, even during pregnancy, has a direct result on their physical and mental programming. (And of course this relates to not just food, but love and environmental factors also)."

She added: "So why would I not choose to feed my baby girl smoothies and send her to school with salad and sushi? Yes, she does have treats from time to time... (cake/lollies at birthday parties/whatever her friends are having). But she knows that it’s a treat and she knows why 80 percent of the time we eat the way we do. I do my best to explain to her why her plate looks the way it does - mostly vegetables, good quality protein, complex carbohydrates & fats."
