Former mill site could be transformed into 'affordable' waterside homes

Computer-generated images show how a disused canal and a former mill site in Bolton could be turned into a waterside housing estate.

A public consultation has started into plans to build 300 homes, split across two sites in Little Lever.

The affordable homes would comprise one, two, three and four-bedroom houses and apartments, as well as offer private gardens and designated parking areas to residents.

As part of the plans the former Creams Paper Mill site in Mytham Road would be completely transformed, while homes will also be built in Hall Lane.

Creams Paper Mill was eventually closed and demolished in 2004 after operating as a paper mill for more than 300 years.

Watson Homes acquired the site earlier this year and the Salford-based developer now plans on regenerating the currently disused Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, to provide the community with access to the water and surrounding woodland.

Rob Watson, director at Watson Homes, said: “Our priority is always the people who will be benefiting from our builds: the local community.

“We are holding this public consultation as this ambitious project has the potential to absolutely transform a major part of Little Lever. We want to know what the surrounding community thinks of our regeneration aims and how we can incorporate their views into our plans.”

Gillian Worden, Associate at P4 Planning added: "It has been a pleasure to work with Watson Homes and the wider project team on this ambitious scheme to regenerate the former Creams Mill site, as well as bringing forward development at Hall Lane.

"This will provide much needed homes, and enable extensive works to the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal.

"We look forward to hearing the views of the local community."
