Former midwife pleads not guilty to manslaughter of babies during home births

A former midwife has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges over the deaths of two babies during home-birth deliveries in South Australia.

Police charged Lisa Barrett, 51, from Petwood in the Adelaide Hills, with two counts of manslaughter last year following their investigation into the deaths of two infants.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court, Ms Barrett pleaded not guilty to unlawfully killing Tully Oliver Kavanagh in October 2011 and an unnamed baby in December 2012.

During a bail application in June last year, defence lawyer Mark Twiggs said the charges were dated and his client was now "completely out of the health sector".

"She hasn't for a number of years been practising in this area," he said.

"In fact, she's studying law at Flinders University."

Today, Ms Barrett tried to have her arraignment date in the Supreme Court postponed because she has exams.

Magistrate Elizabeth Sheppard refused the request and remanded Ms Barrett on continuing bail to be arraigned in the higher court on June 18, when a trial date will be set.
