Former Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga makes surprise move after being released

Middlesbrough's club record signing Britt Assombalonga has found a new club after being released.

The striker, who Boro forked out £15million for back in 2017, has made the surprise move to Turkey.

He has signed for newly-promoted Super League side Adana Demirspor. Assombalonga, aged 28, has penned a three-year contract with the Turkish club.

A Tweet from Adana's official Twitter account read: "Our club has recently signed a 3-year contract with Britt Assombalonga, a 28-year-old from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who played for the Middlesbrough team.

"Welcome to our family! #Assombalonga"

Assombalonga was one of the most prolific strikers in the EFL following goal-laden spells at both Peterborough and Nottingham Forest.

He left Boro after notching 45 goals in 152 games for the Teessiders.

He tweeted: "To everyone at Middlesbrough football Club, I want to thank you all for the past 4 years!

"It’s been a good journey & came across so many good people! Coaches, fans & especially the players what a changing room. All the best for the future."

The £15m Boro forked out is the second-highest an EFL club has ever paid, with only Wolves ' signing of Ruben Neves more expensive at just over £16m.
