Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr stepping down from Playoff selection committee

Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr is stepping down from his position on the College Football Playoff selection committee citing health reasons.

"This is a difficult decision because I have enjoyed my preparations and I have the greatest respect for the other committee members and the playoff itself," said Carr in a statement. "I regret that health issues will prevent me from executing the responsibilities expected of a committee member."

Carr, 71, was getting set to begin his first season with the group which will ultimately decide the four teams to play in the playoff.

"Lloyd will be missed," said Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff. "He knows and loves college football, but we all understand."

The committee expects to remain at 12 members heading into this season with its first rankings set for Tuesday, Nov. 1 and then four more Tuesdays before the final rankings revealed on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Carr is not the first member to step down because of health concerns.

Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning and former USC athletic director Pat Haden left the committee for health reasons as well.

The remaining members of the committee are: Kirby Hocutt, Barry Alvarez, Jeff Bower, Herb Deromedi, Tom Jernstedt, Bobby Johnson, Jeff Long, Rob Mullens, Dan Radakovich, Condoleezza Rice, Steve Wieberg and Tyrone Willingham.
