Former Miami RB Williams will get shot to keep starting job with Chiefs

Former Miami Dolphins running back Damien Williams will be remembered by Dolphins fans as a tough, fun rotational back who made some plays in the passing game but generally wasn’t a centerpiece of the team.

After 4 seasons with the Dolphins, in which Williams scored 9 touchdowns and never averaged greater than four yards per carry, the Kansas City Chiefs appear ready to re-define Williams’ NFL career.

General manager Brett Veach took to the podium in Indianapolis for his scheduled press conference session and spoke about the team’s plans for Damien Williams.

“(Williams) just needed an opportunity and when the opportunity presented itself he kinda took it and ran with it. That’s why we extended him. He’s always been a talented player…I would certainly say going into this off-season and 2019 season that it is his job to lose.”

The revelation isn’t stunning, considering the Chiefs did extend Williams on a 2-year, $5.1M deal.

Time will tell if Williams’ spurt of production in Kansas City is sustainable. He had career highs in yards (256), rushing touchdowns (4) and yards per rush (5.1) with the team in 2018.

The vacancy in Kansas City came with the stunning departure of young, talented running back Kareem Hunt last off-season.

Williams’ skill set isn’t on Hunt’s level, but the team may remedy that by bringing in a complimentary back. For now, it’s Williams’ job.
