Former professional Japanese baseball pitcher Satoru Komiyama, who also played for the New York Mets, will become the varsity team manager of Tokyo's Waseda University, his alma mater, in January next year, the university announced Wednesday.
Komiyama, 52, was Waseda's ace pitcher and captain. In 1990, he was a first draft pick and joined the Lotte Orions, the predecessor of the Chiba Lotte Marines, in Nippon Professional Baseball's Pacific League. Komiyama posted the league's best earned run average in 1997.
After playing for the Mets, he rejoined Lotte in 2004 and retired in 2009.
Waseda belongs to the Tokyo Big 6 League of college baseball teams.
