Former McDonald's Holdings Co. (Japan) chair Eiko Harada, 72, was arrested by the Shibuya Police Department of the Metropolitan Police Department on Saturday on suspicion of assaulting his wife.
Investigators believe Harada hit his wife, who is in her 50s, in the arms and legs with golf practice equipment at their home in Tokyo on Friday. He denies the charges.
The wife reported the incident to the police. The Shibuya Police are investigating the situation in detail.
Harada is known as a "professional manager" who has worked his way up from the Japanese subsidiary of Apple Inc. to the top management of McDonald's Holdings Co. (Japan) and Benesse Holdings, Inc. In 2019, he had been appointed chair and chief executive officer of Gong cha Japan in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, a unit of the Taiwan bubble tea specialty chain.
