Former Mauricio Pochettino team-mate backs Liverpool to win Champions League final against Tottenham

Former Liverpool winger Maxi Rodriguez has backed the Reds to win the Champions League final over Tottenham.

The Argentine followed the same career path as Mauricio Pochettino - leaving Newell's Old Boys for Espanyol - and has revealed he will be supporting Jurgen Klopp's side on June 1.

Speaking to Fox Sports in Argentina the attacking player also admitted what he thinks about Liverpool's current set-up and English football.

Rodriguez told: "Fair play is different in England and you have to learn fast and respect it. When I went to Liverpool, I had to adapt.

"I played with Pochettino, but I want Liverpool to be champions.

"Anfield is one of the best stadiums I have played in. The atmosphere and the people there are amazing."

The 38-year-old veteran, who won the League Cup during his time on Merseyside, later described his admiration for Kop icon Steven Gerrard.

"Steven Gerrard is a legend and a very simple guy," he said.

"At Liverpool, the fans were intense for 90 minutes but after that, on the street, they are very respectful.

"I played with very good players at Liverpool like Luis Suárez, (Javier) Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt."

The Argentinian forward continued: "English football now has a clear long-term strategy and a plan.

"You can see the results, all four finalists in Europe are English and they did well in the last World Cup.

"Liverpool couldn't win the Premier League because of how Manchester City were playing. I love how Liverpool are playing. This kind of competition will only make both teams better."

Klopp's men will take on Spurs in Madrid next weekend, while Rodriguez is still plying his trade in the Primera Division.

His current contract with his boyhood club, Old Boys, is set to expire in 2020.
