Former Manchester United youngster Callum Gribbin on trial at Sheffield United

Callum Gribbin is on trial at Sheffield United following his release from Manchester United in the summer.

Gribbin was one of 13 youth team players released by United at the end of last season having failed to make the cut during his time at the club.

The 20-year-old rose to stardom in the United youth academy but was released earlier in the year after a career which was seriously hampered by injury.

Such was the talent of Gribbin in his early career that United even had to fight off interest from Liverpool in order to ensure he stayed at the club. However, his spell at the club came to an end in June of this year.

Gribbin has been without a club following his release, but was in action for Sheffield United on bank holiday Monday. The tricky winger netted the opening goal as their U23 side lost 4-3 away at Queens Park Rangers in the Professional Development League fixture.

It remains to be seen if anything will come from his latest training spell, but Gribbin will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow former United player Ravel Morrison, who also signed for the Blades following a trial earlier in the summer.

Former United prodigy Morrison starred for Sheffield United in a friendly game against United last week, and Blades manager Chris Wilder has confirmed he is now in contention to make his Premier League debut for the club.

"He's ready. Yeah, he's ready," Wilder told a pre-match press conference. "He's been involved in both squads, so he is ready. We played a behind-closed-doors games at Manchester United in the week and he played 90 minutes in that, it was a great exercise for us."
