Former Manchester United striker signs for French club after rejecting new contract

Deji Sotona has agreed to join French side OGC Nice after rejecting a new long-term contract with Manchester United.

MEN Sport reported earlier this month Sotona turned down the offer of a three-year professional contract as he wanted a weekly salary just under five figures.

It is believed the Republic of Ireland youth international also wanted the guarantee of a first-team promotion this season and did not see that happening if he stayed at United.

Nice announced they had reached an agreement for Sotona on Wednesday afternoon and released a statement speaking of their delight to land the young striker.

"OGC Nice is delighted to welcome an element with great potential who will join Patrick Vieira's group this season," the official club statement read.

Sotona made 11 starts and 11 substitute appearances for the Under-18s last season and scored the winner in their FA Youth Cup quarter-final victory over Wigan at Old Trafford.

His exit from Old Trafford leaves United short of options at youth level this season with Anthony Elanga the sole striker availble to Neil Wood at reserve level.

Summer signing Joe Hugill, 16, has already been promoted to the U21 side and started for them in the penalty shootout victory over Rochdale in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.
