Former Manchester United striker sends Anthony Martial message ahead of crucial season

Louis Saha has told Anthony Martial he must remain focused and fit for Manchester United this season and that he could score over 20 goals if he does so.

It's been a frustrating few years for Martial, who has found himself slipping down the pecking at Old Trafford. He was loaned out to Sevilla last season where he again struggled to make an impact.

But the 26-year-old now finds himself back at Old Trafford and could be a big part of Erik ten Hag's plans - especially should Cristiano Ronaldo leave the club.

Martial is one of the only recognised strikers at United and should be given more playing time next season. Saha has now told him he must take his chance after a few frustrating years.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, with Sky Bet Fan Hope Hub, he said: "I think now more than anything he has gained more experience. He understands what the fans were unhappy with last year, last few years, his fitness was not a problem but maybe his consistency, how to actually do the hard thing in football - scoring goals.

"This is what we have the situation dragged on because of a bad buzz he complained with the manager, maybe the respect behind that wasn't there I don't know, I'm not going to go into details, but those things need to be behind because when he's on form, when he's focussed, he's unplayable.

"You don't need just him to play well, you need the club to play well and [be an] amazing player like Cristiano, Marcus as well. Eriksen is going to help. The manager believes that this team needs to defend well higher on the field will help the strikers because it will feel like the unit, the wires a lot close, this will bring confidence as he won't be isolated all the time that we've seen over the years with different types of tactics, two sitting midfielders and all that.

"It's not helpful when you're not as confident as a side that you expect, especially at a big club like Manchester United. I think it was difficult for Cristiano last year, we've seen it so if Anthony is in the right system he can do amazing and score 20, 25 goals, there's no doubt about it."
