Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen names Erling Haaland transfer "risk"

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has admitted that signing Erling Haaland would be a "risk" for any club - but believes one of Europe's top clubs will take a chance on the teenage star.

The 19-year-old is on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in world football and has been heavily touted with a move to Manchester United .

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side short on attacking options following the summer departures of Alexis Sanchez (on loan) and Romelu Lukaku, Haaland has been linked as the man to add another dimension to United's attacking options.

Having scored in every Champions League game this season (eight in five outings) for Red Bull Salzburg, as well as 16 goals in 14 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga, there is a lot of demand surrounding the striker.

Former United frontman Owen has admitted that, due to the age of Haaland, he would be a "risk" for any club, given the amount of money that could be needed to sign him, however, he believes one of Europe's elite clubs will take that gamble on him.

"At the start you think, Austrian league, can I take this seriously? I was like that but now he's scored in all five Champions League games against proper opposition," Owen told BT Sport.

"Napoli twice, Liverpool, for starters. When someone does that, I think then you have to sit up and take notice. Does that mean that right now he's worth £50m? Someone's probably going to take the risk.

"At the minute, it probably is a risk. You just don't know what he's going to be like consistently playing against the top boys but so far so good. His stats are quite staggering."

He added: "He's got the presence, he's got the size, to lead the line. He's two-footed, you see a lot of his goals, left foot, right foot. Just trying to judge if he's going to be a top-class player at a higher level in the future is difficult.

"One thing you do know, you can translate goals at any level. Whether you get as many, but that instinct, you can't teach an instinct and he's got that instinct of being in the right place at the right time. Whatever he does, he's got that instinct to score goals.

"If he's got quality with it, great at holding the ball up, a good touch, then who knows where he can go? Just that instinct in the game will get him goals in the game because he will score loads of goals."
