Former Manchester United star sends defensive transfer warning

Manchester United don't need to sign any defenders in the summer transfer window, according to the club's former defender Wes Brown.

United's defence has been functioning well under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of late, having notched nine clean sheets in their previous 11 matches.

That run has also seen United remain unbeaten, though when their next game will take place remains to be seen after English football and Uefa ordered a blanket ban for the immediate future, due to the spread of coronavirus.

United are due to play next against Brighton on April 4, though the COVID-19 virus could mean the season is pushed further back into the summer.

But whether or not that happens, United will still be looking for additions before the 2020/21 season begins. And former Old Trafford centre-back Brown believes defensive signings perhaps aren't needed.

“I don’t necessarily think that’s the right thing to do,” he said.

"I don’t mind players coming in if they’re going to improve the squad but, in general the defence has been pretty good this season.

“You always want to improve. So if there are players that the manager likes and they’re available and they fit in the team then I don’t see a problem in that but I don’t think it’s necessarily needed in defence.”

Brown then lauded the current batch of United defenders. He said the partnership between Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof has been superb this season.

Speaking to Goal, he said: “It has just started to click because they been given time. Lindelof and Maguire have been brilliant,” Brown added. “It has taken time but that was always going to be the case and I think they have done well.

“[Aaron] Wan-Bissaka is doing exactly what I thought he would do, he is a great defender and he’s improving all the time with his attacking skills.

“And then there’s [Luke] Shaw and [Brandon] Williams who have good competition between each other which is pushing them both on.”
