Former Manchester United star makes bold Arsenal prediction after Europa League win

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Arsenal have a "good chance" of winning the Europa League.

Arsenal wrapped up their group stage campaign with a 4-2 win over Dundalk on Thursday evening, Mikel Arteta's men winning all of their six games.

They now face an anxious wait for Monday's draw to find out who they will face in the Round of 32 - the Gunners able to draw runners-up from other groups and the unseeded teams from those who dropped out of the Champions League.

But regardless of who comes out of the hat, former Manchester United and Bayern Munich midfielder turned BT Sport pundit Hargreaves believes Arteta's men might have what it takes to go all the way.

"I think Arsenal have a good chance of winning this competition," he said after Arsenal's win over Dundalk. "(Folarin) Balogun came on and made a good impact.

"(Joe) Willock has played great. It's really good for young kids from the academy to come in and play at this level.

"They showed some real quality moments."

That claim is despite the likes of Manchester United dropping into the Europa League, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men losing out on qualification to the Champions League knockout stage on Wednesday.

Though, Arsenal have beaten United in the Premier League this season despite their domestic struggles so far this term.

One of the questions being asked of Arsenal is whether they can maintain their Europa League form against better opposition having been handed a relatively comfortable group.

But the Gunners can only beat what is in front of them, and in his post-match press conference, Arteta was keen to point out that no European win comes easy.

"Well the group stage in general is really positive," he said. "Obviously it’s never easy to win six games in Europe I think we’ve been really consistent and performing well.

"Today’s performance is overall positive because we won the game, but as well we had some moments after scoring the first two goals that we were a little bit disconnected and got a little bit confused of what the game required, which is normal because the job is done in the group but as well not the standards that we need.

"And then we reacted, we got better. It’s true that we rotated a lot of players we gave players that haven’t played any football in the last year some games and some young players.

"So there were a lot of positives but some things as well that we have to improve."

The draw for the next round is set to take place at 12pm on Monday, 14 December.
