Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo opens up his rivalry with Lionel Messi

Former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo opened up on his rivalry with Barcelona icon Lionel Messi during a revealing interview on ITV.

The ex- United star sat down with Piers Morgan to discuss his trophy-laden career and his personal life in the most in-depth interview of his life.

Ronaldo is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers to have ever lived, breaking countless amounts of records, lifting major honours and scoring goals upon goals.

The 34-year-old's main rival in world football is the Barcelona star, who has enjoyed a similar level of success in football.

Ronaldo believes that Messi pushed him to become a better player and vice versa.

"Many people are surprised when I speak with him at Uefa, but my relationship with him is we are not friends, but we share the stage for 15 years," he said.

"I have a good relationship with him and I know it pushed me to be a better player and I push him to be a better player."

Morgan pressed Ronaldo on whether his Argentine rival was the best player he'd ever played against.

The Juve star replied: "Yes! For sure."

Ronaldo also revealed which record he wants to beat the Barcelona star to once their playing days are over.

"Golden Balls (Ballon d'Or). I would love it and I think I deserve it," he said. "I would love it and I think I deserve it.

"Messi is a fantastic guy, fantastic player.

"But I think to have 6, 7 or 8. I am above him."
