Former Manchester United player urges club to complete transfer for new striker

Former Manchester United full-back Clayton Blackmore believes his former club needs to beef up their forward line before the end of this summer's transfer window by drafting in another striker.

The Reds have completed two signings so far this summer, landing goalkeeper Tom Heaton and England international Jadon Sancho, whilst a move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is close to being finalised.

That trio will significantly strengthen all three of their respective position, especially the arrivals of both Varane and Sancho, with United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having been eager to bolster both his centre-back and wing options.

But despite splashing out more than £130m on the duo, Blackmore believes the Reds need to invest in a striker - despite rating Edinson Cavani as one of the "best in the world" at this moment in time.

"I still think United need another centre-forward," said Blackmore - who won five major trophies during his 16 years at Old Trafford - in an interview with TribalFootball.com on behalf of BonusFinder.

"Cavani is still one of the best in the world right now along with [Robert] Lewandowski and [Erling] Haaland.

"I don't know the situation with Haaland, but you'd take him because he's fast, he's powerful and he's a great finisher.

"It would be great if we could sign him, but we have got Mason Greenwood who should be playing down the middle."

With Marcus Rashford ruled out for the first couple of months or so of the season, and Anthony Martial in the process of working his way back to full fitness, United are likely to call upon Cavani, who netted 17 goals in all competitions during his debut season at Old Trafford last term, to spearhead their forward line.

Although he is now 34 years old, the Uruguay international has shown he still knows his way to goal and will be hoping to provide the goods for United once again this term.

Although United have spent big-money on Sancho and have an agreement in place to splash out on another hefty-sized transfer fee on Varane, the club's next priorities are likely to be a right-back and defensive midfielder, rather than an additional forward.
