Former Manchester United player Philip Mulryne is a new priest in Cork.
Father Philip grew up in Belfast and played under the watchful eye of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
He says that sport for him and his friends in the 80s was what kept them off the streets, reports Cork Beo.
He played Gaelic Games and soccer in his childhood and kitted out for Manchester United in the 90s alongside Cork footballing legend Roy Keane.
He told Trevor Welch on The Score on Cork's 96FM: "I was playing for my county and we were drawn against Manchester United. I had a good game and afterwards I was invited over to England for a trial.
"I was 14 when I signed and when I was 16 when I moved there to play full time."
Father Philip has played for a number of teams including Norwich City, Cardiff City, Manchester United, Leyton Orients and King's Lynn.
He even played for the Northern Ireland national team on and off from 1992 to 2007 making 49 appearances for the side.
A number of years ago, Father Philip returned to the north and decided to enter the priesthood at the age of 29.
He was ordained in 2017 as a priest for the Dominican Order and he is now based at St Mary's Dominic Church on Popes Quay in Cork City.
