Former Manchester United player Jimmy Greenhoff falls ill at Old Trafford ahead of Chelsea match

A former Manchester United player was taken to hospital after falling ill at Old Trafford ahead of today's match against Chelsea.

Jimmy Greenhoff, who lifted both the FA Cup and Charity Shield in the 1970s, was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

He was due to attend a meet and greet with fans in one of the hospitality suites at Old Trafford, a spokesman for the club said.

The Manchester United spokesman said: "We can confirm that Jimmy Greenhoff was taken ill while at Old Trafford prior to today's game.

"Everyone at the club wishes Jimmy a speedy recovery."

The former forward, now 73, scored 12 goals in 34 games for United between 1976 and 1977.

Supporters voted him player of the year in 1979 after he finished as the club's top scorer.

Greenhoff, from Barnsley, also played for Leeds United, Stoke and Crewe Alexandra.

His younger brother Brian Greenhoff, who died in 2013, was also a professional footballer.

Manchester United beat Chelsea 4-0 at tonight's match.
