Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal tells Matthijs de Ligt to sign for Man City

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has advised Matthijs de Ligt to sign for Manchester City at the end of the season.

The Ajax defender continues to be linked with a high-profile move in the summer transfer window following an exceptional campaign for both club and country.

United have themselves been linked with a move for the 19-year-old as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to reinforce his defensive options in the coming months.

However, Van Gaal believes that a move to City to play under Pep Guardiola would be the best move for the youngster if a move to Barcelona does not materialise.

City themselves are interested in signing a new central defender as they plan ahead for life without Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi, and the former United manager thinks there would be plenty of opportunity for the Dutch international at the Etihad.

"De Ligt at Juventus? I think De Ligt can play in any competition," he told Ziggo Sport .

"In Italy they are the masters of defense, so he can best develop there. If I had the chance I would go to Barcelona.

"They have central defenders who are not too good, so he will play there. Or I would go to Manchester City. I don’t think the central defenders are that great either, so he’ll play there too."
