Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hails "genius" Arsenal forward

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has praised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's "genius" goal against Newcastle United which handed Arsenal all three points on Sunday.

While United kicked off the new Premier League campaign emphatically with a 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea , the Gunners picked up their first win of the season against the Magpies at St. James Park.

Unai Emery's men struggled to find a breakthrough until the 58th minute when Aubameyang was picked out by Ainsley Maitland-Niles before beating goalkeeper Martin Dubravka with a deft chip.

Mourinho, who managed United from 2016 to 2018, reserved special praise for last season's joint top-scorer during his punditry debut for Sky Sports.

"I think he loves to be in front of the goalkeeper," the Portuguese said. "He’s cool, he loves to be there and of course, what I love to say, simplicity sometimes is genius.

"That control looks simple but it’s not simple, it’s genius. Then the finishing is beautiful."

After sharing the top scorer award with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane last year, the former Borussia Dortmund man admitted he had his eyes on the prize again.

Aubameyang said: "Of course it is in the mind of a striker but first of all the team is the most important. I’m really pleased the goal helped us win the game."

The Arsenal forward scored twice against Manchester United last season and will be hoping to extend his scoring record against the Red Devils when the two sides meet again on September 30.
