Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho gives verdict on Man City VAR decision

Jose Mourinho says that match officials 'got it right' during the crucial moments of Manchester City's Champions League exit against Tottenham.

Pep Guardiola's side were knocked out of the competition on Wednesday night after a dramatic 4-3 victory over Spurs which saw them eliminated on the away goals rule.

The seven-goal thriller was not without controversy as VAR was heavily involved in two crucial moments in the match.

Tottenham's decisive goal was awarded after Fernando Llorente bundled the ball over the line, to which match referee Cuneyt Cakir consulted the Video Assistant Referee and allowed it to stand despite suggestions of handball.

City themselves thought they had won the game deep into injury time when Raheem Sterling netted a brilliant goal, however VAR ruled that Sergio Aguero had been offside in the build-up.

And speaking about the match former Manchester United manager Mourinho praised VAR for spotting an infringement which no official 'in history' would have spotted otherwise.

“Two inches offside, no referee, no linesman in the history of football would disallow that goal in these circumstances, only the VAR,” Mourinho told RT.

“I think they got it right.

"The VAR should be to take some pressure form the referee. In the yesterday's case they put in his hands a big decision. I look also to the coaching perspective. How is it possible, at a Champions League level, that so many mistakes."
