Former Manchester United forward James Wilson makes retirement admission

James Wilson admits he could have retired from football after he was released by Manchester United in the summer.

The 23-year-old striker left Old Trafford earlier this year upon the expiration of his contract having failed to make the grade at United.

Wilson eventually signed a permanent deal with Scottish side Aberdeen having impressed previously during a loan spell at the club last season.

However, the former United young player of the year admits that retiring from the sport altogether was one option which presented itself after his exit from Old Trafford.

"I think it was a bit of a turning point," he told The Mail. "I could have packed it in if I wanted to, but I don't want to because I love the game. I could easily have gone into something else, but that is not what I wanted to do at this point.

"It was never in the back of my mind — well, it must have been because I'm telling you that now, but it wasn't something I considered."

Wilson is looking to regain his confidence playing for Aberdeen, but he admits he still has dreams of making it as a top striker in the English Premier League.

He added: "I'd like to think I've not hit my peak yet, so I'm working towards that (getting back to the Premier League)

"I'm coming in every day trying to make myself a better player, a better person, and, if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out.

"That's just the way football goes but I'm certainly going to do everything I can within my power to make it happen."
