Former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo in tears during emotional TV interview

Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears after he was shown a video of his late father for the first time.

The former Manchester United forward was reduced to tears by the clip during part of a revealing interview with Piers Morgan.

During the interview, which airs on ITV on Tuesday, Ronaldo was shown a video of his late father Jose Dinis Aveiro who died of liver failure when he was only 52 years old.

The short clip shows Mr Aveiro stood on his doorstep and talking about his son.

"I never saw the video. I never saw that video. Unbelievable," Ronaldo said as he wiped away tears from his face.

The Juventus forward was the asked about the clip and in particular how it felt to hear his father speak so proudly of his young son.

"Yes, a lot," he added.

"I think the interview would be funny, but I didn't expect to cry. But I never saw these images. I don't know where you... I have to have these images to show my family."

Ronaldo's father died when he was just 20-years-old, and so never got to see his child playing at his peak in the sport. In the time following his father's death Ronaldo has gone on to win the Ballon d'Or five times as well as leading Portugal to glory in both the European Championships and the Nations League.

The former United forward continued: "I really don't know my father 100 per cent. He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation. It was hard.

"My family see, my mum, my brothers, even my old son, but my father, he didn't see nothing, and it was... he died young."

Cristiano Ronaldo Meets Piers Morgan airs Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.
