Former Manchester United favourite Rafael Da Silva leaves Istanbul for new challenge

Former Manchester United defender Rafael Da Silva has left Istanbul Basaksehir after just one year at the club.

The right-back signed for the Super Lig side in September 2020 on a two-year contract with the option of a third year and played for the side in the Champions League last season against United in the group stages.

But now after just one year in Turkey, the Brazilian defender has posted a farewell message on his Instagram account revealing that he has left the club and is now looking for a new challenge.

In a short statement on his official account, the 31-year-old said: "I would like to thank you Başakşehir and also Okan Buruk to trust in my work.

"Sadly the way it goes. Things changes football is like this. I couldn’t fight for you this season but it was a nice year here with open and down. Now it’s time for a new challenge! Let’s go!"

He then posted a tweet saying "next team is loading" with speculation that he could join his twin brother Fabio at French club Nantes.

Rafael joined United back in 2008 along with his identical twin brother and eventually became the heir to Gary Neville at right-back, winning three Premier League titles, a League Cup and playing in two Champions League finals.

He then left the club after a fall out with Louis van Gaal in 2015, joining Lyon and spending five seasons in Ligue 1 before moving to Istanbul.
