Former Manchester United defender urges club to let two stars go

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker believes the club must sell both Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba this summer, amid exit rumours.

Real Madrid and Juventus have shown interest in Pogba, who has said he wants to leave for a "new challenge", while MEN Sport understands United will listen to offers for Sanchez. The latter has been a flop since signing from Arsenal in January 2018, scoring just three league goals in 32 appearances; although United want to keep hold of last season's top scorer Pogba.

The two are among the highest earners at Old Trafford, although Pogba has been praised elsewhere for his attitude during United's pre-season tour — and his performance in their tour opener against Perth Glory.

Parker told Eurosport: "You have to let Pogba and Sanchez go.

"Pogba’s a definite one. He wants to go – that’s been stated, but the only thing he’s not done is go on strike. You don’t know whether it’s struck him to do that.

"When people are watching him week-in-week-out they see what I see. You see him sulking."

But on Sanchez, who performed respectably for Chile in the summer's Copa America and has not yet joined up with United for their pre-season programme, having been given an elongated break, Parker was even more emphatic. The latest suggestion is that the former Arsenal star may stay with United due to a lack of summer suitors.

"Sanchez was another massive mistake," he said.

"It was a ridiculous signing and it was always going to go wrong. He wasn’t needed. But how do you get rid of somebody when they’re carrying so much money in their wage packet? You’d have to supplement them. You might have to give him over 50 per cent of his wages. It’s madness.

"Whatever club he goes to next, they’re going to have the same issues as well."
