Former Manchester United defender reveals reason Liverpool tied down Divock Origi with new deal

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says he understands Liverpool's decision to tie down Divock Origi.

The forward signed a new long-term contract with the Reds in July, just over a year on from when it looked as though his time at Anfield was set to come to an end.

But instead, Origi went on to write his name into the club's folklore when he scored the Reds' second goal in their Champions League final victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.

The Belgium international also scored important goals against Everton and Newcastle United as Jurgen Klopp's side narrowly missed out on the Premier League title.

And Neville, speaking ahead of Liverpool's Premier League opener against Norwich in which Origi scored during the Reds' 4-1 win , has opened up on why he believes the Anfield heirachy offered the 24-year-old a new deal.

"He scores important goals," the former Manchester United full-back told Sky Sports.

"There is a real difficulty for Liverpool when it comes to trying to sign someone who could be on the bench.

"Origi is happy to play second fiddle to the front three. I can see why they secured him. He is a bit scruffy at times but you are never going to get another one of those front three players on the bench regularly."
