Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam resigns as Feyenoord head coach

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has resigned as head coach of Feyenoord.

The Dutch club confirmed on Monday evening that Stam had stepped down from his position with immediate effect.

Stam's resignation comes after a disappointing 4-0 defeat at Ajax in De Klassieker on Sunday afternoon, with the Rotterdam-based club winning just three of his 11 league games in charge.

While the Dutch giants have also been beaten by Rangers and Young Boys in this season’s Europa League.

“I've thought about it well and for a long time,” Stam said in a statement after the news of his departure was confirmed.

“My final conclusion is that it is better for the club, the players and myself if I step aside.”

Stam, who made 79 appearances in a three year spell at Old Trafford, only signed a two-year contract at De Kuip in the summer, having also had managerial stints with Reading and PEC Zwolle.
