Former Manchester United defender gives verdict on Ashley Young's red card against Wolves

Danny Higginbotham felt Manchester United could have no complaints about Ashley Young’s red card against Wolves.

Young, 33, was dismissed during the second half of Man United’s trip to Wolves for a second bookable offence after he caught Diogo Jota with a lunging tackle.

It was referee Mike Dean’s 100th red card in the Premier League and played a part in United eventually crashing to a 2-1 defeat at Molineux.

While there were some objections from United’s players, there was no issue for former Old Trafford youngster Higginbotham.

The Sky pundit said Mike Dean made the right decision in dismissing Young.

“We talk about the possession from Man United but what they then do is press really high,” he said on Sky’s coverage.

“It just goes out of Young’s reach and it’s a poor challenge. It’s the correct decision from Mike Dean. He does win the ball, but it’s then his foot goes through into Jota and you can see why Mike Dean has given him a second yellow. That’s what Wolves are so good at. They allow you to have the possession.

“Then what they’ll do when they see an opportunity they will then press. Any mistake any pass that is astray they’ll take advantage.

" I think from Mike Dean’s perspective, it’s not a good pass to Young from McTominay. He wins the ball but it’s then the follow through that catches Jota. That’s why Mike Dean gives the foul and the second yellow.”
