Former Manchester United coach makes Pep Guardiola admission

Rene Meulensteen believes Manchester United should have done everything in their power to bring Pep Guardiola to the club after Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

The former United coach believes United are still paying the price for not appointing someone like the current Man City manager when Ferguson left the club in 2013.

During his time at the club Meulensteen won three Premier League titles as well as one Champions League as part of the coaching staff under the legendary Scot.

However, the 55-year-old departed the club six years ago when incoming manager David Moyes decided to bring in his own members of backroom staff.

Speaking after the derby defeat against City on Wednesday night Meulensteen spoke about the aftermath of Ferguson's retirement and rued the missed opportunity by not appointing Guardiola.

"If Sir Alex Ferguson would have still been in charge I think there would have been two or three or probably four changes," the former United coach told Stadium Astro.

"Players would have left the club and again you would have just carried on. I think that was the biggest thing for me.

"I would have done everything in my power to bring Pep Guardiola to Manchester United.

"I think his philosophy is so close in terms of the attacking way to play as we always wanted."
